Caulfield Cup Information

A major Melbourne Racing Club Group 1 horse racing event on the Australian horse racing calendar, the Caulfield Cup. One of the highest-rated races in the country, and for good reason.

An amazing spectacle to watch as some of the world’s best horses battle it out over a distance of 2,400 meters for a chance to win a whopping $3 million in prize money.

Hosted by the Melbourne Racing Club – one of Australia’s leading event and sporting providers – the Caulfield Cup is one of the key lead-up races to the widely popular Melbourne Cup, “the race that stops the nation”.

First run in 1879, the second most popular horse race in Australia, the Caulfield Cup, has a rich and long history and has produced some of the best horses of the country.

The race is the highlight of the Caulfield Cup Carnival and for many punters the main attraction of Caulfield Cup day. Other prominent races that take place on the Caulfield Cup include Tristarc Stakes, Ethereal Stakes, Caulfield Sprint and Moonga Stakes, among others. There are also special events during the Caulfield Cup day, including the chance to meet A-list celebrities and participate in fashion shows, such as “Caulfield’s Fashions on the Field”.

Open to international competition since 1998, the Caulfield Cup’s international reputation has been growing rapidly since then. A total of 18 horses’ line up for the race each year with the field being made up by a ballot system of more than 200 nominations. Moreover, there are a number of other factors that come into play when it comes to deciding the prize money, the field, and placing in lead up events.

The latest edition of the Caulfield Cup is expected to be big! There are many of the best local and international horses lined up to participate in this event, so the competition will be fierce. The Caulfield Cup 2016 is held at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday, 15th of October.
It is complimented by two additional days preceding Caulfield Cup day in the Caulfield Cup Carnival, which includes the Caulfield Guineas Day and Blue Sapphire Day.
